Intensifying its protest against Union Railway Minister and local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal on Monday, the Chandigarh BJP started a signature campaign demanding Bansal’s resignation from the Ministry.

Party workers, led by city chief Sanjay Tandon, initiated the protest at Sector 17 market on Monday. The protest would continue on Tuesday as well and the party aims to cover city’s key markets during the signature campaign in a week’s time.

On Monday, the BJP managed to get over 1000 signatures from various shopkeepers and other people in Sector 17 market demanding Bansal's resignation.

The signature campaign would be organised in Sector 26 Grain Market on Tuesday; on May 8, it would be organised in Sector 22 market.

To mount pressure on Congress for Bansal’s resignation, the BJP has also planned to reach to the city denizens on the issue. For this, a campaign would be started in various sectors of the city and the party workers would protest against Bansal and call for citizens support for the purpose.

Tandon said, “The party has started signature campaign today. This would continue in the coming days and we would cover key markets of the city.”

He added, “Today, we have got over 1000 signatures demanding resignation of Bansal from the post. We hope to gather more signatures in the coming days. People want change and removal of corrupt ministers from the top post is important for the same.”

“Bansal must resign forthwith, as his position has become untenable. The Railway promotion scam involving Bansal is serious on many aspects. It is really shameless the way Congress is defending corrupt Ministers like him,” he added. The party also criticized the UT Administration for imposing Section 144 near Bansal’s residence and at other offices of Congress. Tandon said, “This is injustice as people are peacefully protesting against a corrupt minister.”

The city saw several protests against Bansal after his nephew Vijay Singla was arrested by CBI on Friday on the charge of accepting bribe to fix plum position in the Railway Board. Singla, who is setting up mall-cum-hotel project, Acropolis, in Chandigarh's industrial area, has business interests in real estate.
