In an attempt to prevent environmental degradation, Punjab Forest and Wild life Preservation Minister Chunni lal Bhagat on Tuesday urged the farmers of the State to stop stubble burning to keep the environment pollution free. He said that farmers could use stubble as organic fertiliser.

The Minister advised the farmers to sell the stubble to the biomass plants to generate electricity. He said that the farmers could fetch a price of Rs1,100 to Rs1,400 per acre of stubble sale. He said that the farmers could contact biomass plants situated at village Gulabewala and Channu, district Mukatsar, village Gadda dob, district Ferozpur, village Bhagora, district Patiala and village Bijjo, district Hoshiarpur.

Bhagat said that the smoke erupted from the stubble burning is hazardous for health besides becoming the reason for many accidents.

In the winters, smog develops in the northern region and is largely due to stubble burning by the farmers.
