Uchana Kalan, one of the five Assembly constituencies of Jind district, is all set for a gripping fight of supremacy between two big political Jat families of Haryana in the October 21 Assembly polls.
The political rivalry between Birender Singh's family and Chautalas is not new in Hisar. Both families have a long political history and stronghold in the State. Chaudhary Birender Singh is the great grandson of Chhotu Ram, the illustrious farmer leader, and has always been seen as a successor to the political heritage of the family. Singh's wife Prem Lata (59), a sitting MLA, was re-nominated from the seat by the BJP for the Assembly elections. Dushyant Chautala after winning Hisar Lok Sabha seat on Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) ticket in 2014, has now floated separate political outfit, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and filed his nomination from Uchana Kalan to give a fight to Prem Lata in this Assembly election.
This will be a repeat of the 2014 contest between the two. At that time, Prem Lata, defeated Dushyant by 7,480 votes.
The number of total voters in this constituency is 206,589 which include 1,12,911 male and 93,675 female and three third gender. 26 candidates filed their nomination from this constituency. Satpal Gaindakhera is candidate of INLD while the Congress has fielded greenhorn Balram Katwal. The segment comprises Uchana Kalan town and 65 villages. It’s an acid test for Prem Lata to hold on to the seat.
Moreover, Dushyant, who won the 2014 elections as INLD candidate, is now representing the newly formed JJP, which is contesting all 90 seats in the state. Dushyant parted ways with the INLD in December 2018 after a bitter split in the party and the Chautala family. Dushyant's father, Ajay Singh Chautala gad defeated Birender Singh by 621 votes in 2009 Assembly polls.
Om Prakash Chautala had shifted to this seat after Narwana in Jind district was reserved for Scheduled Caste legislator in delimitation in 2009. In 2009 Assembly elections, OP Chautala had contested against Birender Singh, whereas in 2014 his wife had contested the election and Chautalas had fielded Dushyant.
