Haryana Chief Minister Manohar lal on Thursday reiterated that it is the responsibility of all the States to supply drinking water to Delhi, but till now only Haryana is supplying water to Delhi.
People from all parts of the country live in Delhi, therefore, all neighbouring States should supply water to Delhi, said the Chief Minister while speaking at a two-day ‘Sinchan-Chintan Shivir’ organised by Irrigation and Water Resources Department in Karnal.
Describing water as one of the major natural resources, he said that diversification of crops is necessary for conservation of water. He said that when Haryana came into being in 1966, water used to be a very important issue. Several agitations were fought for conservation of water.
With a view to conserve water in the changing scenario, we would have to change the methods of irrigation. There is a need to adopt drip irrigation instead of flood irrigation. Information technology should be used to irrigate crops keeping in view the weather, said he.
The Chief Minister said that Hansi-Butana Canal was constructed to supply water of Haryana, but the issue is in the court. The water of Yamuna should reach Vrindavan which is a cultural centre and a delegation of saints had called on him in this regard.
On the occasion, Irrigation and Agriculture Minister OP Dhankar said that in Singapore, people recycle water and use it.
With the increase in population, the consumption of water has also increased. Water management is taught to students in Hungary, therefore, he urges the Vice Chancellor of CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar to introduce a course on water management, added Dhankar. Haryana has a total of 15,000 ponds. Out of these, water has been supplied to 2,600 ponds through canals.
