Holy city of Amritsar is soon becoming politicians’ abode. Just about three months after BJP stalwart Arun Jaitley tried to shed the “outsider’s” tag by purchasing a house in Amritsar, Congress heavyweight Capt Amarinder Singh has purchased a property.
But the two have something more in common than just immovable assets in Amritsar — they now have their home in the city’s posh locality — Green Avenue, besides their addresses having similar figures.
Jaitley had purchased Rs 1 crore five-room house, numbering 343, few days after he started his election campaign in Amritsar to assure the electors that he would stay here to solve their problems. On the other hand, Capt Amarinder took the house, number 444, that belongs to one of his close relative.
“Capt Amarinder had offered Jaitley to give his home to him during campaigning as Capt Amarinder was sure that he’s going to win and would stay here in the city to remain available for the people to solve their issues. This city has been dumped in the garbage by the BJP since its previous three tenures,” Capt Amarinder’s close aide told The Pioneer, while adding that the house was being furnished for him to shift in the immediate future.
In an apparent attempt to shed the image of an “inaccessible” leader, Capt Amarinder has also set up his regular office manned by a permanent staff.
“The office will be functioning from the 4 Court Road, Amritsar, which was his election office earlier. It would have permanent staff, and Capt Amarinder will be meeting people and workers in this office only,” he said. Capt Amarinder has always been criticised for being difficult to get to.
Now, he will be dividing his time between Amritsar, Chandigarh, Patiala and Delhi.
