Accusing the Congress-led Punjab Government of succumbing to education ‘mafia’ by providing admission to outsiders in state’s medical colleges, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday demanded immediate review of the decision.
AAP MLA and the Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Harpal Singh Cheema slammed the Capt Amarinder Singh Government for allowing floodgates of admissions to students from other states in medical colleges in Punjab. “The decision would not only prove detrimental to students pursuing careers in medicines but would also to the interests of the people of the state for many reasons than one,” he said.
He said that the decision needed to be reconsidered sooner than later. He demanded that a review committee of technical experts comprising members of all political parties be constituted to look into the entire botch up.
“The state government has not only reneged on its own decision earlier taken on January 21, 2000, but has also thrown the clear-cut directives of the apex courts – The Supreme Court of India and Punjab and Haryana High Court – to the winds,” he said.
Cheema alleged that the government had bowed down to the education ‘mafia’ active in the state which was calling the shots at the behest of their political masters. The recent decision by the government was in continuation of its anti-student move, which would not be allowed to continue for long, he said.
Maintaining that that the scheme would not only pose roadblocks for the students of Punjab origin but also prove disastrous to the people, which would impair the health services in the state, he said that the students from other states would return to their respective states after achieving medical degrees in the state of Punjab.
He demanded that the government should immediately review decision for the larger interest of a vast majority of the students who have been left to suffer in silence.
