A Balancing Act: Jakhar Announces His ‘Team BJP’

In a calculated strategic move aimed at striking a harmonious balance within the party, Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Sunday announced his new team, combining both fresh faces and seasoned political stalwarts. The reshuffle showcased Jakhar's faith in the existing BJP cadre while welcoming leaders from the Congress ranks who have recently crossed over.

Jakhar, who took charge of the Punjab BJP just two months ago after his switch from Congress to BJP, has methodically formed a team that seeks to bridge the gap between the newcomers from Congress and the longstanding BJP loyalists. His announcement underscores his trust in the party's dedicated members, reaffirming his commitment to strengthening the party's existing foundation.

In a landmark development for the Punjab BJP, Jakhar orchestrated a sweeping transformation that heralded the arrival of prominent leaders from diverse backgrounds into its core group.

At the heart of this transformation was the inclusion of esteemed figures like former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, Union Minister Som Parkash, former MP Vijay Sampla, ex-Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, and former Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker and ex-SAD MLA Charanjit Singh Atwal, among others. Their presence not only infused a wealth of experience but also exemplified the party's vision of unity in diversity.

The core group, comprised of 21 distinguished members, boasted a mosaic of talents, including former Congress leaders Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, Raj Kumar Verka, and Kewal Singh Dhillon, former Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma, Avinash Rai Khanna, and Tikshan Sood, all handpicked to contribute their unique perspectives and expertise.

As the final touch to this grand transformation, the state’s core committee welcomed special invitees including the BJP's national vice-president Saudan Singh, national general secretary Tarun Chugh, parliamentary board member Iqbal Singh Lalpura, state in-charge Vijay Rupani, state co-in-charge Narinder Raina, and general secretary organization Manthri Srinivasulu.

Further expanding its leadership footprint, Jakhar appointed seasoned leaders like Subhash Sharma, Surjit Kumar Jayani, KD Bhandari, Rajesh Bagha, and former Congress stalwarts Arvind Khanna, Fatehjang Singh Bajwa, Balbir Singh Sidhu, and Gurpreet Singh Kangar as state vice-presidents — a move aimed at fostering inclusivity while maintaining the party's core values.

The most notable change in the executive team is the appointment of Jai Inder Kaur, daughter of former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, as the head of the party's women's wing, Mahila Morcha, in the state. This shift represents a significant departure from the previous leader, Meenu Sethi, who now assumes the role of State Secretary. Jakhar's decision highlights his dedication to diversifying party leadership while retaining the expertise of experienced members.

In a substantial reshuffle, Jakhar has also appointed Rakesh Rathour, Dayal Singh Sodhi, and Jagmohan Singh Raju — all close associates of former state president and party MLA Ashwani Sharma — as vice-presidents, in addition to their previous roles. These strategic promotions reinforce Jakhar's intention to maintain continuity within the party while adjusting the responsibilities of key leaders.

Jakhar's tenure as state president appears to focus on achieving balance within the party, ensuring that the BJP in Punjab remains united and cohesive. While there haven't been drastic changes in the existing executive committee, his reshuffling of leadership roles sends a clear message that the party is receptive to new perspectives while relying on the experience of long-serving members.

Another significant aspect of Jakhar's leadership is his emphasis on increasing women's representation within the party. The number of women in the executive committee has increased from six to eight, signaling a move towards a more inclusive leadership structure. However, this shift has come at the cost of Lakhwinder Kaur Garcha, who previously held the position of State Secretary but has now been relieved of her duties.

Furthermore, the BJP in Punjab is actively seeking new and youthful leaders to head the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha (BJYM). Karanvir Singh Tohra, who was the State President of BJYM, has been appointed as the State Secretary, leaving the BJYM leadership position vacant. This reflects the party's ongoing quest for fresh, dynamic leadership.

In addition to this, the party welcomed a fresh wave of leadership with 12 new state secretaries, featuring prominent names like former Congress MLA Harjot Kamal, Shivraj Chaudhary, Sanjeev Khanna, Daaman Thind Bajwa, Renu Kashyap, and Karanveer Singh Tohra, signifying a blend of experience and youthful dynamism.

Former IAS officer SR Ladhar was entrusted with leading the party's Scheduled Castes wing, amplifying the party's outreach and inclusivity.

The BJP's commitment to diversity and comprehensive leadership was further exemplified with the appointment of former Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Amarpal Singh, who joined the BJP in February, to lead the state unit's OBC morcha.

Jakhar's approach to reshaping the party's leadership in Punjab is a finely tuned balancing act. He combines the strengths of loyal BJP members with the infusion of fresh faces from other political backgrounds, all in pursuit of strengthening the party's presence in Punjab and ensuring it remains a formidable force in the state's political landscape.
