For the first time in the history of Punjab Police, no less than 22,000 havaldaars will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI). Besides, 1,077 ASIs will be promoted as Sub-Inspectors and 251 Sub-Inspectors as Inspectors.
The process of promoting constables to the rank of ASI will be completed in a phased manner according their age.
The first promotion in the series of three phases, as many 7,500 constables will be promoted on Independence Day, that is this Wednesday. And the remaining promotions will be made in the gap of a month.
All those Punjab police officers and employees, whose promotion got delayed because of one or the other reason, will now get promoted, said the state police chief Suresh Arora on Monday.
Notably, the Home Department has given authority to the district officers to promote the ASI-level officer.
“Home Secretary NS Kalsi has now given these powers to the police officers at the district level. Besides, the non-gazetted officers would also be given their due promotion so that they do approach courts and granted their promotions on time,” a senior police official told The Pioneer.
Only recently, the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had launched ‘one rank up promotion’ scheme to end stagnation in the state police force. At that time, he had ,made it clear that the scheme would currently encompass only rank elevation, and the government would look at finding ways to also enhance their salaries.
At that time, the Chief Minister had expressed concern over the disillusionment in the force due to high stagnation in the rank of Head Constable and Non-Gazetted Officer (NGO), as several police officials are not promoted despite being eligible due to the availability of fewer vacancies in the rank.
As per the scheme, no police personnel would now face any difficulty for their promotion and no employee would face retirement before the promotion of ASI.
Arora had earlier stated that provisions have been made under the scheme that employees would get promotion after 16 years of service from head constable to ASI and Sub-Inspector post after 24 years of service from ASI. Besides, Sub-Inspector would get promotion as an Inspector after 30 years of service, he had said.
