The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is closely tracking Tata Consultancy Services' decision to lay off over 12,000 employees globally, mainly from mid- and senior-level roles. The ministry is in contact with TCS and aims to understand the causes behind the move, given that employment growth remains a national priority.
TCS, which had a total workforce of over 6.13 lakh as of June 30, 2025, announced the layoffs as part of its strategy to become a “future-ready organisation.” The company cited focus areas including AI deployment, reskilling, and workforce realignment. While 5,000 employees were added in Q1, around 2% of the global workforce will be let go over the course of the year.
TCS stated that appropriate support, including benefits and counselling, will be extended to affected employees.
