The Baleno, which is expected to be launched in India in early October, is the carmaker’s attempt to compete with the Hyundai i20 in the premium hatchback space and, is expected to be priced similarly.

The Baleno will be the second product that Maruti Suzuki will sell through its new premium Nexa showrooms and will feature a 1.2 litre petrol and 1.3 litre diesel engine for the Indian market.

The Baleno will also be the first car in India to feature Apple's 'CarPlay' system. Thus, system which requires an iPhone is a revolutionary car connectivity system and Maruti executives are convinced that it will be a sales differentiator for the new car.

The European models will feature all-new engines but Maruti's Manesar plant will be the exclusive manufacture base for the Baleno globally.

The i20 has been a surprising hit for Hyundai and is one of the best selling cars for the Korean manufacturer selling close to 10,000 cars in a few months. This entry into the segment has been long expected from Maruti.
