Carrying forward the momentum from the last week, the benchmark Sensex rose by 110.44 points and ended at its one-month high of 20,811.44 on Monday. Despite weak global trends, Sensex surged as institutions initiated fresh buying in capital goods, banking, pharmaceutical and automobile stocks. Nifty also rose by 30.65 points to 6,186.10 along with rupee, which gained five paise backed by buying in the stock markets.

Coupled with institutional buying and weak American currency overseas, rupee appreciated by five paise and ended the session at Rs 62.07 per dollar. As per experts, dollar selling by exporters also helped the domestic currency gain. Buying foreign institutional investors (FII) also helped in improving the overall sentiment of the stock markets. As per the provisional data provided by the stock exchanges, FIIs bought shares worth Rs 266.87 crore.

On Sensex, out of the 30 listed stocks, 22 stocks rose led by Tata power as it surged by 5 per cent followed by BHEl and Axis Bank, both of which rose by over 3.85 per cent. While most of the stocks registered gains, state-owned NTPC tanked 11.43 per cent to end the day as the biggest index loser on concerns that the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission's (CERC) tariff regulations would be negative on the power producer.

With February derivative expiry around the corner, brokers warned investors of extremely volatility ahead. Among the 12 BSE sectoral indices, 7 indices ended the session with gains while real estate index remained flat. Capital goods index rose the most by 2.63 per cent followed by bank and healthcare indices which surged by 1.19 per cent and 1.11 per cent respectively.
