Despite India being major food producing countries in the world, only 10% food gets processed and there is a lot of wastage, according to Union Minister of Food Processing Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

While inaugurating the first SIAL Food India exposition at Pragati Maidan on Sunday, she said, “With modern technology in food processing coming to India food wastage will reduce substantially.”

Participants from 109 countries exhibited thousands of products, showcasing the scope of food processing industry.

Harsimrat said, “The expo shows that the world has realised the opportunities that India presents in food processing. As the number of food shows increases, it will result in more modern technology and tie-ups of companies with our local farmers and producers which will result in greater opportunities and more employment for the youth as food processing is an employment generating sector.”

The Minister visited various stalls and encouraged woman entrepreneurs to avail several benefits and subsidies available for women. She also encouraged the exhibitors to source raw materials from rural and tribal areas.
