In a glaring example of the city slums being hubs of illegal narcotics and liquor trade, a youth was killed for opposing the activities of drug mafia at Naryani slum in Unit-8.
The deceased was identified as P Subrat Rao alias Chandu, who was a drug addict and had recently returned from a de-addiction centre.
Chandu’s family members alleged that he was killed for opposing narcotics trade in the slum. They even claimed that Chandu was providing information about the narcotics trade to the cops.
The family alleged that a woman and another person who peddle drugs and sell liquor in the slum were at loggerheads with Sanju. After the youth was found dead both of them had locked their houses and fled from the area.
Police are investigating the incident.
However, the incident in the heart of the city has raised questions on the Commissionerate police’s "Basti Ku Chala’ programme, which is aimed at curbing crimes and nabbing criminals, particularly those coming from outside the city and seeking shelter in slums to escape the police dragnet.
