With an aim to propitiate lord Shiva to ward off nature’s fury, the locals of Kendrapada township area on Saturday organised a three –day long Biswa Shanti Mahayajna at the altar of the Bileswar Mahadev peeth in Tinimuhani.

While heat wave continued to cause havoc, the earthquake of Wednesday night had spread much panic in the locality. The locals are also apprehensive about possible disasters like tsunami, cyclone and flood. Hence, they held the ritual of sacrifice.

Hundreds of devotees, including women, came out in a procession carrying on head pots full of holy water from a local river to the Yajna place at the Bileswar Mahadev Peeth.

According to several women devotees who participated in the pot procession, since coastal Kendrapara is prone to various kinds of natural disasters, rituals like this can go a long way in appeasing God and preventing mishap.

There are numerous instances of such types of Yajna held in the past when the villagers faced natural disaster or an epidemic in this district. They used to arrange ritual of sacrifice to save their property from the wrath of Nature. Believing that natural disasters or epidemic are curse of God, they arrange the rituals to propitiate the supreme powerful.

“Without God wanting, noting can happen. So, almighty is great and we have to bow before Him and say our prayers so that He can save us from any disaster,” stated a few members of the Yajna Committee.
