Woman moves OHRC for justice

After being denied justice at the local police outpost, a distressed woman of Gobindapur village under the Cuttack Sadar police Station on Friday moved the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) as she has been being subjected to mental and physical torture by her in-laws for dowry.

Sasmita Parida filed a petition at the OHRC alleging that her in-laws had demanded Rs 2 lakh as dowry after a month of her marriage with Ananta Parida. When her father expressed his inability to give such a hefty amount of money, her in-laws started torturing her both mentally and physically, she alleged.

“One day, my husband caught their parents physically assaulting me. When he opposed my father in-law Narendra Parida managed to send him to jail by implicating him in a false case,” the victim contended in his petition.

She further alleged that on January 3 night, her in-laws tried to eliminate her by setting on fire.

“When I reported the matter at the Bentkara police outpost under the Cuttack Sadar police station, they did not heed to my plight; instead they abused me,” alleged she. She appealed to the human rights body to take necessary actions against the guilty and ensure justice to her.
