A dog died after being burnt alive allegedly by a woman near the Budheswari Temple under the Laxmisagar police limits here on Saturday.
Sewa Hi Sankalp, an animal welfare organisation, has lodged an FIR in this regard against the woman at the local police station. Cops detained the woman for questioning while further investigation was underway.
The woman has reportedly confessed to the crime.
According to reports, the dog used to eat food by entering her house during her absence. She had earlier thrashed the animal several times while a video of the incident went viral on social media platforms recently.
At around 4.30 pm on Saturday, the woman crossed all limits of cruelty as she poured petrol on the dog and set it on fire.
Being informed, Sewa Hi Sankalp members reached the spot and recovered the dog’s charred body.
Notably, a couple of days earlier, a man shot dead a stray dog and injured another in an act of revenge as the two animals killed some of his chickens in the Jagamara area of the city.
Accused Kitab Patnaik fired pellets from a shotgun killing the dog and leaving the other critically injured.
Members of the Sewa Hi Sankalp reached the spot, rescued the dogs and rushed the animals to a veterinary hospital, where one of the dogs was declared dead. The injured one was undergoing treatment.
The organisation has lodged a complaint against Patnaik at the Khandagiri police station. On the basis of the complaint, police have registered a case and started an investigation.
The accused had absconded on knowing about the registration of the case. Till last reports came in, he was on the run and efforts were on by police to trace and nab him.
