PNS

The Orissa High Court has imposed a cost of Rs 20,000 on the State Government and also ordered the State Government to pay compensation of Rs 30,000 to a woman who got pregnant even after undergoing sterilisation process at a Government facility.

Justice Arindam Sinha last week observed that the sterilisation process resulted in failure to prevent pregnancy and, therefore, the woman is entitled for compensation and a cost has been imposed on the Government for not following proper procedures of sterilisation.

The woman had approached the court stating that she had gone through the sterilisation process on January 2, 2014; later, she conceived and delivered a child. Since she is in financial crisis and unable to meet the expenses of the newborn.

Disposing of the petition, the court said the compensation and the cost should be paid within four weeks and hoped that the money would be spent by the woman for the benefit of the child.
