Though the grant of Geographical Indications (GI) tag to “Odisha Rasagola” was perceived as a happy ending to the battle between Odisha and West Bengal over the sweet’s origin, the latter might lose its own title awarded to it for “Banglar Rasogolla”.
Chennai-based Geographical Indications Registry has directed the West Bengal State Food Processing & Horticulture Development Corporation Limited, Patent Information Centre, Department of Higher Education Science & Technology and the concerned petitioner Ramesh Chandra Sahoo to appear before it on September 6 for hearing on the issue.
This is the first hearing after the petitioner filed a rectification/removal petition on February 13 last year. Sahoo, who had filled a PIL in the Orissa High Court seeking a stay order demands cancellation of the GI tag to “Banglar Rasogolla” as West Bengal has allegedly obtained the status fraudulently by submitting fake documents.
