WannaCry havoc: Advisory issued by Crime Branch

PNS

Even though no reports have been received so far relating to the Ransomware attack in Odisha, the Cyber Cell of the State Crime Branch on Monday reached out to the key State Government departments and other stakeholders like Government educational institutions and advised them to protect their systems against Wanna Cry Ransomware to ensure that the digital ecosystem is protected.

The Cyber Cell’s six-point advisory came after the Wanna Cry Ransomware has wrecked havoc across sectors like healthcare and telecommunications in more than 100 countries.

In recent past, websites of many Government and educational institutions in Odisha were hacked by cyber criminals putting the State Government and the CB in a tizzy.

As per the advisory, computer users have been asked to check the email senders and ensure that there are no spelling mistakes in the address, hold mouse over any URl before clicking which would show where the link is actually taking you, ensure that any wrong spelling or domain names that end with uncommon country codes like .ru or .ng typed, delete suspicious emails, instal updates offered by your operating system and software providers regularly, keep anti ransomware and antivirus software up-to-date and enable and configure firewall.

According to experts, Ransomware is a malware that attacks computers and laptops either by clicking on a wrong Uniform Resource locator (URl) or downloading corrupt link in emails, holding the users to ransom. It infects other computers on the same network and is also spreading through malicious attachments to e-mails.
