Baja Student India is an intercollegiate student design competition drawn along the lines of the International Baja SAE Collegiate Design Series held all over the world in various countries. The objective of the event is to allow teams to design, test, and race a four wheeled, single seater off the road vehicle.

“The competition is a huge opportunity for budding automotive and motorsport engineers to compete and learn about automotive engineering and gain practical, industry-standard experience,” a VSSUT release said.

The vehicle features a lightweight space frame chassis, independent suspension on all four wheels, off road tyres, and an automatic transmission CVT with customised two-stage gearbox with a spool setup and many customized parts.

The vehicle, powered by a 305 cc, 10 hp B&S pot reaches a top speed of 70km/h from nougat in under 8s. With the total drive weight of around 200kg, the vehicle gives a very high power to weight ratio.

The total project cost is over Rs 7.5 lakh. The fund was raised mostly by the students, with the additional funding from the university’s student activity fund. MCl, NHCl and Alumni Association and VSSUT have also sponsored it.
