The caste system still prevails in the society as was evident when a man was not allowed to perform last rites of his wife on Thursday due to the 0inter-caste marriage of his father. This was reported from Kuchei village under the Kuliana police station in Mayurbhanj district.
The woman had died of jaundice three days ago. However, her body continued to lie on the ground as his husband was denied permission to take it to crematorium for last rites. According to reports, villagers had imposed a fine on the deceased woman’s family after her father-in-law married a woman of a different caste. As her family was not able to deposit the penalty amount, they were prohibited from performing last rites of the woman.
