Utkal students take poll issue to Guv

PNS

Irate students of the Utkal University on Friday visited the Raj Bhavan in groups and submitted memoranda to Governor and Chancellor of the university SC Jamir appealing to facilitate students’ union polls in the premier institute this year.

On Thursday, the PG Council upheld its earlier decision of cancellation of the elections.

“We apprised the Governor about the current situation in the university and the reasons behind the unrest at the campus. We also brought the issue of nonstudents staying at the hostels. The Governor listened to our grievances patiently and assured us to look into our demand of holding polls,” said a union president aspirant.

Sources said the students owing allegiance to the ruling BJD would also meet the Governor to press their demand for polls.

last week, the PG Council had first decided at a meeting chaired by its Chairman Ranjan Kumar Bal that the polls would not be held in view of the ongoing tension in the campus.

later, students protesting against the decision staged a dharna in front of the main gate of the university while a woman died while she was driving her SUV after being stuck in the rood blockade staged by the students.

Meanwhile, three platoons of police force were deployed to avert any untoward incident.
