Two sisters quit studies to take care of blind sibling

MAlAY RAY

Two elder sisters of Sundargarh district, who are very poor, ditched their studies for their blind sister as one of them is going with her father for earning and another sister is taking care of her blind sister.

Gandru Oram (45) of Juniani village under lahunipada block is a daily wager. Anupama Oram (14), Nirmupama Oram (12) and Satyabhama Oram (8) are daughters  of Gandru , while Niranjan is his only son. Gandru’s wife Dhani Oram passed away  five years ago. Grndru’s youngest daughter Satyabhama is blind since birth. After the death of Dhani, Gandru was completely broken. Neither has he much land nor a BPl card. Consequently, it is very difficult to arrange two square meals for all the members of the family.

According to sources, as Satyabhama is blind since her birth, her two elder sisters have stopped going to school to look after the sibling. Anupama was in Class VIII and Nirupama in Class VI. While Anupama is going with her father to work as a daily wager, Nirupama looks after her blind sister Satyabhama.

Gandru has also not yet been able to provide treatment to Satyabhama because of poverty. In the year 2013, Gandru had applied for pension for Satyabhama and she has started getting pension only two months back.

When contacted, lahunipada BDO Rajendra  Pradhan assured to provide some Government benefit to the hapless family.
