In a worsening situation for girl children in the State, two more newborn girls were found abandoned, one in Baleswar district and the other Gajapati, in the last 24 hours.

In Baleswar, the newborn was rescued from a bridge at Usmania near Salabani village late on Wednesday night.

According to reports, a local woman, Arati Singh, first spotted the baby lying on the bridge at around 12.15 am and rescued her. She informed two Ward members of the village about the matter.

They called up an ambulance and sent the baby to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.

In the Gajapati district incident, the newborn girl was rescued from a forest at Adaba village on Thursday morning. A few locals, who had gone to the forest to graze their cattle, found the baby and took her to a nearby hospital. After preliminary treatment, she was later shifted to a hospital in Mohana.

The condition of the baby became stable and she would be handed over to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of the district after necessary formalities, said a doctor.
