Two legendary artists' sons to perform in city today

SHYAMHARI CHAKRA

Acclaimed artists Deepak Maharaj and Salil Bhatt, both sons and disciples of two of India’s legendary artists Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharj and Grammy awardee Mohan Veena, exponent Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, respectively, are scheduled to perform at the Rabindra Mandap here on Sunday (June 18).

The concert - Smritiyaan- is jointly organised by the New Delhi-based Tabla Wizard Pandit Chaturlal Memorial Society and the well-known Bhubaneswar Music Circle (BMC).

Chatur lal, who passed away at the young age of 40 in 1965, was instrumental in popularising tabla in the West. He accompanied famed Indian musicians like Ravi Shankar, Baba Allauddin Khan, Nikhil Banerjee and Ali Akbar Khan. His legacy is maintained by the Pandit Chatur lal Memorial Society that is being managed by his elder son Charanjit Chaturlal, daughter-in-law Meeta lal, granddaughter Shruti lal and grandson Pranshu lal, informed the hosts.

The evening’s concert would commence with solo Kathak recital by Deepak Maharaj from New Delhi, who belongs to the illustrious family of Kalka-Bindadin gharana. Born in 1970, he received his training from a very tender age from his father and started performing at the young age of nine and also accompanied his father on many concert tours in India and abroad. He would be accompanied on tabla by Pranshu Chatur lal and on sarangi by Ghulam Waris.

Similarly, Salil Bhatt, concert would follow the Kathak show, represents the tenth generation of the famous Bhatt lineage. The 1971-born artist is the creator of the Sattvik Veena, the instrument that he plays while his father is known as the creator of the Mohan Veena.  Pranshu Chatur lal, the grandson of Chatur lal, will also accompany Salil Bhatt.

The late legend’s granddaughter Shruti Chatur lal will anchor the event, the hosts informed.
