Cops arrested two people on Wednesday for withdrawing Rs 9 lakh fraudulently from the bank account of Brajarajnagar-based businessman Sumit Agrawala through net banking. Jaleswar police station IIC Dillip Sahu said the arrested people (one identified as main accused Ashok Roy (32) of north 24 Pragana of West Bengal) were handed over to the Brajarajnagar police as the case is registered there. The identity of the other one is yet to be divulged by police with the cyber crime being committed in Jaleswar in Baleswar district recently.

Ashok committed the crime by obtaining a duplicate SIM card against Sumit’s mobile number from the Jaleswar BSNl office. And he managed to accomplish the task by impersonating himself as Sumit. On April 13, he reported to the Kamarpada police station that he had lost his mobile phone in Mahagaba near Jaleswar and obtained the station diary that he produced in the BSNl office to obtain a duplicate SIM card.

On the same day, he transferred about Rs9 lakh from Sumit’s account to another account in West Bengal through net banking. Sumit, who was in Mumbai in connection with his business, received a message that his SIM had been blocked. Worried with the development, after returning from his trip Sumit went to the local BSNl office to find out the reason the led to his SIM being blocked. It was here that he was told that his SIM was blocked on a request made in the BSNl office at Jaleswar.

Afterwards, he came to know that about Rs9 lakh had been transferred  from his account. He soon lodged a complaint with the Brajarajnagar police station. The police then informed the Jaleswar police and BSNl office at Jaleswar about Sumit’s complaint. Subsequently, the BSNl office at Jaleswar blocked the SIM card again. When Ashok went to the BSNl office to find out why his SIM was blocked, police caught him there, said Jaleswar SDPO SR Malick.

Brajarajnagar PS IIC Akash Sahu said police apprehended Ashok and another person in connection with the offence. “We suspect a racket working behind the whole incident. Besides Ashok, we have arrested another person and are verifying his role,” said Sahu, adding, “The cops were also verifying how the BSNl office at Jaleswar issued a duplicate SIM which is of Brarjarajnagar and also the role of police who made a station diary in the case. A case under Section 420 of the IPC and 66 of the IT Act has been registered, he said.
