A nor’wester wreaked havoc in some parts of the district on Sunday uprooting electric poles and trees, blowing away roofs of houses and damaging crops.

Sources said thundershower hit several parts of the district, but Ganchapara and Bobei gram panchayats were hit severest, where the roofs of more than 70 houses were blown away.

Fruit-bearing trees of mango, cashew nut and Nilgiri were uprooted, leading to disruption in vehicular communication. Power supply was disrupted after several electric poles were uprooted as well during the thunderstorm.

“I have never witnessed anything like this before in my life. The storm and rain was very severe and has led to lot of damage,” a local said.

Meanwhile, local administration has also assessed the damage and have assured of compensation. “We have estimated the amount of damage in the two GPs. A total of 70 houses were affected during the thunderstorm and as per partial damage relief code we will ensure compensation to the affected,” Raighar BDO Runu lakra said to the media.
