Palpable tension prevailed at the District Headquarters Hospital following a newborn was allegedly killed after it slipped from hand of the doctor attending the delivery case and fell on ground.
The family members lodged an FIR alleging that the child was killed by the doctor as they failed to fulfil the sum of money demanded by the doctor, informed Kendrapada Town police station IIC Sanjeev Kumar Mohanty.
According to Mohanty, one Goutam Mallick (26) of Matiparilo village under Mahanga police limits, on Friday lodged an FIR alleging that his wife Jharana Mallick (22) on December 7 was admitted at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for delivering a child. On December 9 wee hours, Jharana developed pain. Gynaecologist Dr Biranjan Swain, who was on duty, attended his wife who gave birth to a baby boy. But the next moment, the newborn fell on ground from the hands of the doctor and died on the spot.
Jharana alleged the doctor allegedly threw the child intentionally as he did not get money from them.
Gynaecologist Dr Swain was not available for comments. However, Kalpana Mishra, a nurse of female medicine ward, who attended the newborn, stated that the child was born dead. She defended Dr Swain saying that the allegation against him was false.
Meanwhile, Town police rushed to the hospital and seized the dead child and sent the body for autopsy after registering an unnatural death (UD) case at the police station.
When contacted, ADMO Dr Harihar Panda stated that an inquiry had been sought in this regard.
