As many as nine huge cylindrical earthen pots containing a sweet solution to the brim, called Adaharpana, were damaged on the chariots after offered to the Lords on board here in Puri on Sunday. It’s an important ritual performed during the Rath Yatra, a day before the deities entre the Shreemandir.
With the pots churning into pieces there, the holy liquid flew all over the wooden floors touching the ground.
The Adharpana ritual is scheduled on the 11th day of the fest.
A belief behind the ritual, which involves destruction of the tall earthen pots containing the holy liquid, is that the Lords try to please the junior deities (Parswa Debadevi) and evil powers with sweet drinks who were part of the 9-day sojourn to the Gundicha Temple. As per norms, the Adharapana is not for the devotees to receive.
The Adharapana, a solution of milk, sugar, cheese, banana, camphor, nuts and black pepper mixed with extracts of holy basil is prepared in specially designed earthen containers.
The ritual is jointly hosted by the Raghavadas Mutt, Odia Mutt and the temple administration.
On Monday, the Niladribije will be held with the divine siblings, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, returning to the Shreemandir from the chariots.
