'Take steps to check tax evasion in Diwali'

PNS

In view of heavy rush at jewellery shops during Diwali and Dhanteras , Samajwadi Party State president Rabi Behera wrote a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday urging him to initiate measures to check crimes like cheating, tax evasion, adulteration and loot.

The party demanded that Commercial Tax, Weights and Measures and Income Tax Departments be directed to check cheating and tax evasion in cities like Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Brahmapur, Sambalpur, Rourkela and Angul, where heavy rush is expected at jewellery shops.

Besides, the Urban and local bodies should be instructed to crack whips on sweet shops to check adulteration in sweets, while police personnel should keep track of dacoity, loot and law and order situation, said Behera.

As many gold and diamond traders have made lucrative offers in view of the first-approaching marriage season, many unscrupulous people will take the opportunity to make their black money white and thereby evading tax.
