'Switch off lights as Earth Hour today'

PNS

The Cesu has urged all electricity consumers and its employees to observe the Earth Hour on March 25 (Saturday) by switching off all non-essential lights and electrical equipment at offices and homes from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm to pledge their support for saving the earth from carbon emission and global warming.

Now more than 75 per cent of electrical energy is coming from thermal sector. In thermal power plants, one unit of electricity needs 0.6 kg of coal to burn and emits 0.79 kg of CO2 to the environment. Hence, one MWH electricity generation adds 1.09 tons of CO2 in eastern India.

During 2015 and 2016, the Cesu had achieved a saving of about 323 MW and 300 MW respectively by observing the Earth Hour. This year Cesu hopes to get support of 22 lakh valued customers for the cause, said a Cesu release.

Notably, Observation of the Earth Hour started in Australia in 2007 and it became a global event in 2008, having participation of 35 member countries. India joined the campaign in 2009.
