Students upset over admission

AJIT PANDA

Students having lower percentage of marks have been selected for admission into different streams of +3 classes in the Model Degree College at Khariar in Nuapada district whereas students with higher percentage have been disqualified due to delay in updating of the online system of admission by the Higher Education Department (DHE).

Truptimayee Singh Rajput, Rashmi Sonwani and many other applicants who have obtained 50 to 60 per cent of marks in +2 have not been selected for admission, whereas candidates having less than 40 per cent have got intimation for admission. “This is due to fault in online admission system. When I applied online on June 12, the website of the DHE did not show honours subjects, thus I was forced to apply for +3 Science Pass. Honours subject was displayed on 19 July and those who applied after July 19 have been selected although many of them have secured less marks than me,” said Truptimayee, who is going to lose one year if her application is not reconsidered on merit.

More than 40 students like Truptimayee, with some of them having first class, had gathered in the office of the Principal of the college on Saturday demanding reconsideration of their applications.

“This college has only honours subjects, thus those who applied for pass have not been selected. We have informed about the complaint of the students to the department,” said Principal Bhubaneswar Moduli.

The matter was also intimated to the Collector of Nuapada by the college authority. Parents of deprived students stopped the admissionprocess and the admission was postponed to July 3. “We will not allow the admission to take up even on Monday next, if our grievance is not addressed,” said the aggrieved parents.

The Model Degree College was started functioning from last education session, but teachers’ positions are still vacant. Out of 38 sanctioned posts of teacher, only 6 have been posted. “We are doing the job of teaching as well as of the clerk, peon and sweepers,” said one of the lecturers.
