In a major setback to Employment and Technical Education and Training and Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Sanjay Dasburma, a group of students threw chairs at him in his own Assembly constituency at the Alaranath Vocational College, Brahmagiri when he was attending a function in the college premises.

The incident occurred when the Minister along with the college Principal and other dignitaries was about to occupy the dais at the function of the college.

Some students believed to be backed by opposition Congress, suddenly shouted at him and threw chairs targeting him. However, police escorted Dasburma unhurt.

later, supporters of the Minister and the ruling BJD thrashed the attackers. A clash ensued between supporters of the Minister and the protestors, following which police had to resort to a mild lathicharge to bring the situation under control.

However, the reason of creating violence and opposing the Minister was yet to be ascertained. Sources said the students did so protesting lack of road and infrastructure in the college.

A protesting student was detained and was being interrogated, police said.

Interestingly, Dasburma pleaded ignorance about the cause of the incident. “I do not know what their demands are. In politics there should be opposition, but it should be in a decent and democratic manner,” he said.

Meanwhile, police personnel were deployed at the college to avert any further face-off.
