Faced with criticism from the opposition parties and students’ outfits for conducting indirect elections to students’ unions in Universities and Colleges of Haryana, the Manohar Lal Khattar Government’s stand on the election issue seems to be fluctuating with every passing hour.
After creating a lot of confusion and issuing separate directions thrice related to the students’ unions polls on Tuesday, the State Government finally announced to hold these polls on October 17.
A communication from Additional Chief Secretary, Higher Education Department was sent to 13 Universities on Tuesday morning for conducting the students’ union polls on October 17. However, only a few minutes later, another email was sent to the Universities stating that the communication was sent wrongly and inadvertently and may be considered null and void.
Known for its faux pas in official orders, the State Government, then issued another order for the third time, stating that the previous communication sent may not be treated as withdrawn and the elections will be held on October 17. The notification for holding the student union elections will be issued by the concerned affiliating university in due course of time with all the details, stated the third order sent to all Principals of Government, Government Aided and SFS Degree Colleges.
Various students’ organisations of Haryana, including the NSUI, AIDSO, INSO and others have announced to protest against the State Government’s move to hold indirect elections.
Reacting to the government’s orders, Digvijay Singh Chautala, Indian National Student Organization (INSO) chief said that we will not allow the conduct of indirect elections to students’ unions in Haryana.
