Bowing to the demand of the people of Mayurbhanj, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced that the State Government would set up a medical college in the district from its own resources.
Mayurbhanj, it may be noted, had observed a near total 12-hour bandh on Monday in protest against Central Government’s ignoring the district while announcing three more medical colleges for Odisha. The Union Government has announced three new medical colleges in Baleswar, Balangir and Koraput, recently.
The bandh call was given by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and supported by the BJP and a host of organisations like the District lawyers’ Association and the Bhanja Sena.
Government offices, shops and other business establishments downed their shutters while vehicular traffic came to a standstill on the National Highway-5, which passes through the district headquarters town. Train services were also disrupted with protesters picketing on the railway tracks. The bandh was also near total in Rairangpur, Karanjia, Udala and other places in the district.
