To provide pure piped drinking water to people for 24 hours in the State, the Housing and Urban Development Department signed a letter of understanding (LoU) with the Unicef in the presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here on Friday.

The project, named “Drink From Tap Mission”, will begin on a pilot basis for five zones in Bhubaneswar and two zones in Puri and it would be completed by March 2020.

There would be meter systems to read consumption of water under the programme. Members of women self-help groups (SHGs) will be given the responsibility of reading these metres. For this, they would be given training, informed a CMO release.

“Our Government is giving priorities to provide safe and pure dringing water to each household. Potable drinking water helps in building a healthy and developmed society. The project being undertaine with the Unicif will help us reach out target,” said the Chief Minister.

As many as 1,20,000 people of 22,000 families will be provided safe water in Puri and Bhubaneswar under the “Drink From Tap Mission” by March 2020. The project would be executed to other areas in the State in phases.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Pratap Jena, Chief Secretary Asti Tripathy and Development Commissioner Suresh Mohapatra were present. The H and UD Secretary and a Unicef representative inked the LoU.
