In the wake of the number of robberies and vehicle-snatching incidents increasing on National Highways, the Odisha police have planned to form a special force to check such crimes.
DGP Dr RP Sharma said the Crime Branch has been asked to provide information about such crimes occurred in the past three years. After receipt of the list, the special force would be formed. A proposal in this regard has already been sent to the State Government for approval, he added.
The police have taken such a move in view of inconveniences happening to people visiting Odisha from the outside. They usually lodge complaints with police of their respective States. According to reports, criminals attack commuters on NHs more often, particularly at Brahmapur, Bhubaneswar and Khordha, for loot and vehicle-snatching.
As police personnel are facing difficulties for patrolling on the highways, the department is planning to form a special police force, Sharma said.
Besides formation of special squad, police outposts would also be constructed at some prominent locations of National Highways in the State.
Apart from checking crimes, each force comprising an ASI and 12 Constables and Havlidars would reach the accident site and take victims to hospitals, Sharma said. It has been decided that the special police force would be formed in patterns operational in Mumbai, Delhi and Vishakhapatnam. The force would be comprised of the jawans from various battalions, he informed.
