Slogans and rallies on the World Environment Day in the Similipal region looked futile as the visitors were seen taking plastic -polythene carry bags unhindered despite a ban on the products in the park.
Interestingly, the STR (Similipal Tiger Reserve) authorities including the DFOs of the three divisions stated that there is no restriction so far carrying polythene plastic carry bags in and around the sanctuary, responding to a RTI query.
The ban on the material and law providing for action against manufacturers, sellers and users have no impact. It seems the local police and law implementing agencies are acting as mute spectators.
As a result, there is rampant sale and use of polythene material all over. Sumitra Mohanty, a student, said if the authorities had cracked the whip against the producers, sellers and users of polythene and plastic with even one per cent zeal, a lot could be achieved on the front.
