Hundreds of women Self-Help Group (SHG) members have opposed the decision of the State Cabinet on Tuesday to abolish the Odisha Self Help Cooperatives Act, 2001 and have urged the Government to reconsider its decision.

They expressed concern that with the annulment of the law, many women who sought to improve their economic status by forming SHG cooperatives would be deprived.

They said that the unilateral move of the Government to abolish the Act without discussion or consulting with the cooperative members is unjust, undemocratic and not acceptable. Notably, the latest decision of the State Government to dispense with the Act has surprised many cooperative members and activists. PNS
