The city will soon have a traffic management system based on sensor data, so that the traffic density at respective intersections could be controlled by video-based inputs captured and transmitted to a central server and the vice-versa.
Work has started at five places along the Sachivalaya Marg by Gurgaon-based Envoys Electronics Private limited and the entire work is likely to be over by the coming September. Presently, the pilot locations are Housing Board Square, Institution of Engineers Square, BDA City Centre Square, Regional Institute of Education Square and Anand Bazar Square.
Based on the experience over these five pilot projects on the Sachivalaya Marg, implementation and installation of the remaining 53 traffic locations will be easier for the agency, which has taken the contract for the purpose.
The central command control centre will be monitoring the traffic flow and accordingly, with appropriate computational analysis, will direct the traffic inflow dynamics through the signal points.
The CoSi CoSt Technology, named after Adaptive Traffic Control System, would be used so that the traffic signalling cycles or time allowed to complete the traffic flow at a given intersection, at a particular time, would be efficiently and effortlessly managed in near future. The advantages of the system are improvement of travel time reliability by progressively moving vehicles through intersections; reduction in congestion by creating smoother flow across intersections, distribution of green phase time according to equitably for all approaches, faster response to traffic conditions and emergencies, support predicting traffic volumes and adjust signal timings to match these volumes.
The system will further be developed with more additions in the form of Red light Violation Detection, Automatic Number Plate Recognition System, Variable Message Signs, Surveillance Camera for real time emergency and incident management etc.
The Adaptive Traffic Signal Control System being implemented in the city shall be integrated with other smart city modules at a Central Command Centre and provide real-time decision support for achieving the Smart City vision. It will be part of the Intelligent City Operations and Management Centre, under the Pan City Proposal of the Smart City.
