The linking and authentication of Voter ID card details with Aadhaar number has been suspended by the State Election Commission (SEC). This comes in the wake of a directive issued by the Supreme Court in this regard recently.
As per the SEC’s order, all activities pertaining to linking of Voter ID cards with Aadhaar under the six-month-old National Electoral Roll Purification & Authentication Programme (NERPAP) have been suspended with immediate effect.
However, programmes like correction in voters’ list or Voter ID cards and correction of photographs would continue under the NERPAP, said official sources.
All district election officers, electoral registration officers, deputy-election registration officers, booth level officers and other local level election organisations have been asked to obey the SEC’s instructions.
Stern action would be taken if any violations are viewed by the Commission, the SEC has warned.
The Supreme Court’s directive states that Aadhaar card number is not mandatory for Government purposes.
“The Unique Identification (UID) number cannot be used for any purpose other than PDS and lPG distribution scheme,” stated the apex court in its directive on August 11.
