The Government and private schools, which ferry children in their own vehicles, would henceforth engage only buses with minimum of 40 seats for the safety of students, according to a proposal mooted by the State Transport Department.

“We have sent a proposal of a large number of safety measures to the State Government for approval. We would implement them as soon as they are approved,” Transport Commissioner Chandra Sekhar Kumar told reporters here on Thursday.

He said all schools, which ferry students in their own vehicles, would be asked to engage large buses so that students can be transported safely. “The buses will have iron railings on its windows, fire extinguishers and first-aid treatment items ready all the time,” he said.

local RTO officials, school authorities and parents would hold meetings over students’ safety at least four times every month, he added.
