Even as the postmortem reports are still awaited, police here on Saturday maintained after prima facie investigation that a 33-year-old woman perhaps committed suicide by hanging herself after killing her seven-month-old ailing daughter on Friday evening. The gruesome incident took place in a staff quarter of SBI Colony at Tulasipur. “Injury marks on the infant’s hand, feet and neck clearly indicate they have been inflicted by a sharp weapon and the baby perhaps died due to profuse bleeding. Unable to bear the ordeal, the woman might have taken the extreme step,” said city Additional DCP Trinath Mishra Police said the woman Banasmita Ojha was working in the main SBI branch here and her husband works as an engineer in a private firm in the city. The couple has another five-year-old daughter. “When the incident took place, the man was away at his workplace and the elder daughter had gone to the neighbour’s house for playing,” Mishra informed. Family members and acquaintances claim that Banasmita was in a depressed state of mind ever since her younger daughter was detected having an abnormal growth of a tissue in her brain. Even after a surgery, the infant had shown no signs of improvement, for which Banasmita was in a state of depression, said a relative.
