The members of IMA (Indian Medical Association) Sambalpur unit, on Friday, appealed to the people to save the doctors who are putting their lives at high risk while serving patients, especially the Covid affected.
The appeal came from the doctors at a time when attacks and assaults on doctors are on a rise all over the country.
“No doctor commits any mistake knowingly or unknowingly while treating a patient. Still then, people misunderstand the doctors if a patient dies. But death occurs due to critical conditions of the patients but never due to fault or negligence of the doctors,” said Dr Sunil Kumar Sharma, a renowned cardiologist cum honourary secretary of IMA.
The doctors expressed their grave concern over thousands of assault cases during the Covid period all over the country. About 300 cases have been registered all over the country in this connection, said sources.
“Although such cases occur locally, we don’t want to bring it to the notice of the police as it will be a time killing affair and our valuable time will go for such unwanted matters as we want to devote most of our time during this crisis for treatment of the patients only,” president of local IMA unit Dr Kodanda Rao said.
He further clarified that Covid is totally a new disease and there is no particular medicine for it as of now. Hence, patients and their attendants must realise this genuine problem of the doctors, he said. Under the present situation, the doctors demanded proper enforcement of law for security for doctors, declaration of hospitals as protected zones and exemplary punishment to the attackers.
