Hundreds of residents of the Salia Sahi slum here staged a demonstration at PMG Square on Friday protesting the eviction drive undertaken by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in their area for road to construction. Tension ran high in the slum as residents stiffly protested the demolition drive. Hundreds of them gathered at the eviction site and protested the move.
They then took out a procession from the area to PMG Square. They said they would not move an inch from their places unless they are allotted land to construct alternative houses.
Notably, the eviction drive has been undertaken by the BMC to clear illegal encroachments to construct some roads in the area. But due to stiff protests from the slum dwellers, the enforcement team of BMC and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) had to go back.
