A Government doctor was on Tuesday arrested by the Crime Branch police in connection with the alleged rape and abortion of a minor girl in Sundargarh district.
The accused doctor, identified as Debasish Ghosh, had allegedly terminated the victim’s pregnancy at the Birmitrapur Community Health Centre (CHC) on June 15.
Dr Ghosh was quizzed by a Crime Branch team at the Birmitrapur police station, following which he was arrested.
Earlier, former Birmitrapur police station IIC Ananda Chandra Majhi has been dismissed from service and later arrested for his alleged involvement in the rape and abortion of the girl. Majhi and four others are accused of raping the girl over a period of four months while the Government doctor is accused of carrying out the abortion illegally.
DGP Abhay had ordered a Crime Branch probe into the incident. A four-member Crime Branch team has been formed for investigation.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribe (NCST) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from State DGP Abhay in connection with the case under provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocity) Act, 1989 POCSO within a month.
The NCST’s direction came after former National Commission for Women (NCW) member Sukeshi Oram raised the issue with the former.
Following the incident, cases have been registered against six persons at the Raiboga police station in the district.
