The State Government spent a total of Rs39,02,70,000 towards the diet of prisoners staying in 99 jails and sub-jails across the State in the year 2015-16. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said this in the State Assembly in response to a question of MlA Duryodhan Majhi on Monday. The cost of diet per prisoner per day stood at Rs64, he said. Out of 91 jails and subjails, 87 are functional and the rest four are yet to function. In the 87 functional Jails and Sub-Jails in the State, there were 16,260 prisoners as on March 31, 2016 out of which, 15655 are male prisoners and 605 are female prisoners.
