Robots may be used for firefighting soon

PNS

If things go as planned, robots would be deployed to extinguish fire in the State soon.

An Ahmedabad-based company demonstrated robotic firefighting techniques at the Odisha Fire and Disaster Response Academy (OFDRA) here on Wednesday. Built at a cost of Rs 1.30 crore, the robot, equipped with thermal imaging camera and a wireless control system, can easily detect the source of fire.

Many times, Fire Services personnel fail to go near the flames due to high temperature and massive smoke. During such emergency, the robots can gain access to such areas and douse the fire by spraying water through pipes connected with tankers. One operator would be deployed to operate the robot, official sources said.

Currently, the robotic firefighting system is being used in Gujarat and Kolkata.

Official sources said that if convinced about the robot’s efficacy, a proposal may be sent to the Government for its procurement.
