Relief scam: Ganjam residents move SHRC

PNS

The Goutam Nagar Development Committee here moved the State Human Rights Commission, demanding a probe into alleged misappropriation of cyclone relief materials in ward 8 and 9 of Satakutuni gram panchayat in Ganjam district.

The committee members alleged that by depriving the calamity victims of their legitimate dues and compounding their trouble, the local representatives have violated human rights.  Wards 8 and 9 of Goutam Nagar are located near Medical Bank Colony and are quite adjacent to the area under the Brahmapur Municipal Corporation. State Government had declared to provide 50 kg of rice, `500 cash and three liters of kerosene to each family affected by Phailin and subsequent rains in the district considering the enormity of the situation of the locality. Accordingly, Rangailunda Block administration provided the prescribed relief materials to the affected families through concerned ward members, but the latter bungled the relief materials.

The members of the committee further said that though the deprived residents of the two wards had lodged a complaint on the misappropriation with the BDO, Rangailunda, he did not pay any heed. Nor did the District Collector, whose attention was also drawn to the issue, take any action.
