Record number of students passes matric examination

PNS

Not inclined to adopt the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) pattern as followed by the CBSE for Class-X students, the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) Odisha is nevertheless trying its best to match the pass percentage of its students with that of the Central Board.

This was evident when the BSE published the results of this year’s High School Certificate (matriculation) examination here on Wednesday. The Regular matriculates registered an all-time record pass percentage with over 85 percent coming out successfully in the examinations that were held in February-March. More than 35 per cent of them secured marks above 60 per cent.

But when asked, State School and Mass Education Secretary Ranjana Chopra, who along with the department Minister Debi Prasad Mishra, unveiled the result booklets here, told this correspondent that the Government has no plans as of now to follow the CCE pattern for Class-X students.

Out of the 5,52,394 results published in Regular stream, a total of 4,70,645 students passed the examination, registering a pass percentage of 85.20. For the first time in the BSE history, more number of girls (2,38,430) passed the examination than that of the boys (2,32,215).

As usual, the pass percentage in the Ex-Regular category was much lower and was pegged at 58.22 per cent. Similarly, 61.22 per cent students passed in regular correspondence course and only 35.38 per cent made it in ex-regular correspondence course, pegging the overall pass percentage at 83.72.

In the Madhyama Examination (Matriculation in Sanskrit), the results of which were also published on the day, out of 4,896 students appeared, a total of 4,049 came out successful, registering a pass percentage of 88.91.

looking at the record number of students passing the matriculation examination, admissions in the Plus II colleges would see tough competitions. The State has some 1,500 Government and private Plus II colleges that have a combined enrolment strength of around 3 lakh in Arts, Science and Commerce streams.
